How to Overcome Phobias

A phobia, from a Greek word “phóbos means “fear”, is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people. The main symptom is the excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared stimulus. Generally, when the fear is beyond one’s control and is interfering with daily life, we call it a phobia.

It is possible that phobias are locked into brain 1(Primitive) and operate from there at a core level. This part of the brain is pretty crude and basic in its responses to the world. It is concerned with such things as survival, flight or fight, self preservation and territorial/spacial boundaries.

Phobias work the same way for us as Pavlov’s dogs. Some biological response has been tied to some “trigger” or stimulus (usually a result of some emotionally charged incident.)
